Voices United

This organization was created in 1989 by 17 year old Katie Christie, a high school senior at Miami's New World School of the Arts to promote cross-cultural understanding through the arts,  empower young people to cultivate solutions to community problems and promote inter-cultural appreciation and understanding. This group represents the best of what our diverse creative and cultural community is all about and has received numerous CIA grants over the years.

Russell Thomas, Tenor
New York Metropolitan Opera

Back in 1998,  young Miami tenor Russell Thomas was selected to be part of the Aspen Music Festival but could not afford his room and board.  It was CIA to the rescue, and with that he became our very first grantee.
Russell Thomas’ trajectory has been awe-inspiring.
Our local treasure has become an internationally renowned tenor who has graced the world’s great stages with the New World Symphony,  New York Metropolitan Opera,  Opera Frankfurt, Florida Grand Opera,  Teatro Municipal de Santiago, Welsh National Opera, Perth International Festival,  Festival d’Aix en Provence, the Berlin and San Francisco Philharmonics and beyond.  Most recently, he was the First-Prize winner of the prestigious "Viñas Competition" in Barcelona (First Prize, Audience Favorite and Best Tenor) and at the "Competizione dell'Opera" in Dresden

Florida Grand Opera

A perennial CIA grant recipient, Florida Grand Opera is celebrating its 70th anniversary season of continuous performances and stands as one of the oldest performing arts organizations in Florida. Florida Grand Opera is committed to training emerging opera professionals and educating young people about opera while embracing the diverse cultural heritage of the South Florida community. Each year, established education programs, including the School Dress Rehearsal Program and the company’s education festivals expose thousands of children and students to opera’s many facets. Florida Grand Opera’s renowned artist training program, the Young Artist Studio, nurtures gifted young singers and provides them with the skills and experiences necessary to move beyond their training at universities and music conservatories into successful careers in the professional opera world.
